Rahm watched his mate as she went about her nightly routine. He no longer hoped to probe her inner thoughts. A brief side talk with his mama disabused him of the idea that fatal mates could read one anotherâs thoughts the way heâd assumed.
He could tell the weight of the day and the activities had come crashing down on Carleeta and her body was screaming for rest. He joined her in the shower, but made no attempts to do anything more than bathe himself and assist her with washing her back.
He ignored the ache in his groin in favor of taking care of his mateâs needs in other ways. Taking over the task of drying her off, gentle pats of the towel were used to dry her glistening skin. After drying her off, he performed the same task on himself while he watched her use the colorful headwrap to bind her thick coily hair.
The process fascinated him. During his short stay with her prior to her move to Pack lands, heâd learned she did this to protect her hair at night. There was only one night that she didnât go through the process and that was the night they met. In her defense, he really didnât give her space to do much as heâd fucked her into exhaustion.
Thinking of their first night together, put him right back in the condition he was trying to avoid, so he reluctantly left the bathroom. Heâd just pulled the covers back when Carleeta trudged into the bedroom. Instead of walking around to the other side of the massive bed, she entered the side heâd already turned down and scooted over to the center of the bed.
Turning off the bedside lamp, Rahm slid under the covers next to her and gathered her to his chest. They lay there quietly for a period of time and while her breathing was even, he knew she was far from asleep in his arms.
âRahm?â
âYes?â
âWhat did you mean earlier when you were telling Marigold and I about your uncle?â
âWhich part?â
âThe part where you said he doesnât shift.â
Rahm thought back to the conversation earlier. Heâd not spent long giving them background on his uncle, but he did let them know that they would probably only ever see him in his bear form.
âOh. He stays in his bear form. Always. I havenât seen him unshifted in years.â
âWow⦠Is he stuck or does he choose to be that way?â
âI donât know.â
âHuh?â
âMate, as alpha I can pick up on some feelings from pack members, but I canât speak to them mind to mind the way Iâm speaking with you right now.â
âDo you think heâs sick?â
âSick in his body? No. Sick in his mind. I believe so.â
âHe seems so sad.â
âWhat makes you say that?â
âSomething in his eyes. After I got over being terrified of a strange bear, I really looked at him. His eyes look so sad. Do you know what happened to him?â
âI donât have all of the details. He was a member of an elite squad of soldiers that was a mix of shifters and humans.
